Abstract

The research on disaster prepared family is an attempt to find answers on functions of family as the frontline in responding disasters. Facts on Bengkulu earthquake in 2007, local government offices took times in conducting emergency assistance because they had to wait for coordination meeting conducted. Meanwhile, TNI, and POLRI waited for command order and volunteers waited for operational funds. As the disaster broke, first aid assistances on survivors needed to be conducted in seconds, and food provisions needed within hours therefore disaster family prepared in giving first aid is important.


The research indicates that the earthquake and tsunami in Bengkulu has brought trauma for the families; and particularly for those living in coastal areas. Because of the experience, local community is awakened to build preparedness, develop knowledge, and conduct efforts on strengthening family. These steps according to the perspectives of sociology are the answers that humans are creatures that will learn to adapt with natural and social environment and be able to make the best strategic steps in facing the threat of earthquakes and tsunamis.
