Abstract

Toponym is local wisdom regarding records of natural events when a place is named. Therefore, the toponym can be used as an indicator of hazard vulnerability in a place. This study aims to determine the relationship between toponyms and potential hydrological disasters, i.e. floods and landslides, in villages along the Brantas River, Malang City, East Java. Hydrological disaster is a serious concern for Malang City government. As an effort to mitigate, it is necessary to conduct toponymy studies of villages along the Brantas River, Malang City, East Java. This study aims to determine the correlation between toponyms and potential hydrological hazards, i.e. floods and landslides, in the study area. The research was conducted in a qualitative descriptive method. The toponyms were selected from old military maps which were published in 1882-1946. This allows us to conceive evolving landscape and high potential risk hydrological hazards in the study area. The identified toponyms were plotted on the base map and were overlaid to the potential hydrological hazard’s areas from the recent Malang Regional Disaster Management Agency’s map. The meanings of each toponym were studied based on a literature review. This research distinguished 33 toponyms. Seven of them related to geomorphology. Some of these toponyms linked to area which prone to hydrological hazards, i.e. "Ledok". There was also toponym that indicated relatively low risk, i.e. "Jenggrik". Comparing this result with the current hydrological hazard map, we could conclude that some area have used to be high risk hydrological hazards. In contrary, some areas that were low hydrological hazards risk evolved to hydrological hazards prone. These results can be used as recommendation in compiling a risk map for hydrological hazard in the research area. Therefore, it shows the role of toponymy in hydrological hazards mitigation.
